Cancer treatments now delivered in Nantgarw

Tuesday 19th January 2010

Tenovus launched the second day of our cancer treatment service last week in Nantgarw to include the delivery of chemotherapy.

A wide range of treatments are currently offered in Cwmbran on a Thursday, where in excess of 500 treatments have been delivered to date. The Nantgarw launch sees this service double and an expansion into other areas in Wales giving patients access to the services they need, closer to their homes.

Tenovus Mobile Cancer Support Unit, funded solely through donations is delivered in partnership with Velindre NHS Trust.

Claudia McVie, Chief Executive of Tenovus said,

“This extra day is a great milestone for Tenovus as it means we can welcome more referrals for people in the local area who currently have to travel to hospital to receive medical treatment; drastically reducing travel time and strain patients have to endure.

Patients have told us that they would like to be treated closer to their homes– the Mobile Unit allows us to meet these needs. The extra day means we can reach more people and go some way to ease some of the distress and logistical issues long journeys back and forth to treatment can cause.

We are delighted that we can offer patients access to these services in difficult times.  As part of our holistic approach we offer a wide package of support on the Mobile Unit such as counselling, bereavement groups, welfare rights advice and tailored health checks. Through working within communities and developing health awareness we hope to reduce the incidence of cancer.”

Cathy Barker, Chemotherapy Services Manager at Velindre NHS Trust added,

“Velindre NHS Trust are excited about the second day on the bus to deliver more treatments closer to the patients' homes. We have been thrilled with the service in Cwmbran every Thursday, and look forward to developing this second day every Friday. We look forward to treating patients in the radius around Nantgarw and surrounds”.

Tenovus aspires to bring these services to patients who need them in every community in Wales. This can not happen without the support of people fundraising for Tenovus.

A great way to get involved is to join through our ‘Run for the Bus’ campaign; take part in any of the main running events this year on behalf of Tenovus and your money will help us deliver more chemotherapy days throughout communities in Wales where people need care most.
