Choir launches single for Tenovus
Thursday 11th March 2010
THE launch of a Newport choir’s charity single was hailed a big success by organisers, raising £1600 for cancer charity Tenovus. Around 600 people attended the event at Tredegar House on Saturday for a live performance of the song “Don’t Give Up” by community choir Côr Casnewydd. 300 pupils from schools including Malpas Church in Wales Primary School and Ysgol y Ffin took part in the performance.
Organiser Emma Rowland, who is the director of Côr Casnewydd and also wrote the song, said her inspiration came from experience of cancer among friends and family.
Emma said:
“We have had friends and family who have suffered cancer and obviously it is something that touches a lot of people’s lives.
With Côr Casnewydd we try to help as many local charities as we can and we saw this as a real chance to capitalise on the Ryder Cup year and make a difference.
Tenovus is a charity partner of the Ryder Cup 2010, to be held at the Celtic Manor in October, and organiser Alex Dawson said the choir were hoping to raise around £10,000 from sales of the single.
Alex added;
“We’ve still got £7500 of CDs to sell but we have a lot of pre-orders from the schools whose children were involved.
We are hoping for a lot of digital downloads and have put it on iTunes and registered it with the singles chart as well,”
Pupils from Ysgol y Ffin helped translate the words to the single into Welsh and the version is included on the CD, which costs £4. For more information please visit www.corcasnewydd.co.uk
