Welsh National Opera drum up support for charity challenge
Monday 24th May 2010
A group from the Welsh National Opera are bravely taking on the ultimate in mountain climbing challenges in a bid to help raise over £100,000 for cancer charity Tenovus. The Team from WNO have to complete the challenge in 24hours to be back for the Meistersinger dress rehearsal at 1pm the day the challenge finishes.
To keep the teams motivated, members of the WNO hope to carry some of their instruments up Snowdon for a small performance at the summit as the sun rises.
Over 400 people from across the country will be taking part in the Tenovus Three Peaks Challenge on the 13th-14th June, scaling Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon, to raise vital funds for the charity which provides support for people with cancer in the heart of their communities.
The Team, made up of members of the WNO based in Cardiff, are just one of the teams taking on the challenge. Team leader Georgina Govier said: “I have lost very dear friends to cancer, and it is a sad fact that these days we all know someone who has been affected by cancer.
“This 3 Peaks Challenge is a fantastic way for members of Welsh National Opera to work together and raise money for Tenovus whilst completing a tough physical challenge. We have managed to put together a team of walkers from different departments within the Company. It will be a great experience for us all, as well as being a tremendous team building exercise. The challenge falls at an extremely busy time for the Company, happening during rehearsals for our exciting New Production of Meistersinger.
Events Fundraiser Kate Monaghan who organises the challenge, said:
“The Tenovus Three Peaks Challenge was launched in 2003 and has gained momentum to become a key event in the Tenovus fundraising calendar. To date over half a million pounds has been raised for Tenovus through the Three Peaks Challenge and more than 1,400 people have been involved as part of a walking team or support crew, not to mention the number of people and companies who have sponsored these teams and followed their progress.
“This year’s Three Peaks Challenge is guaranteed to be another fantastic event for both Tenovus and those that are taking part. We are looking for between 4-10 people to enter a team for this year’s challenge to help us raise our target of £100,000.
“The teams that enter are always in great spirits and the atmosphere is brilliant from start to finish, but more importantly the amount of money is crucial in helping Tenovus to continue to support cancer patients and their families in their communities, where they need it most. “
