Tenovus encourages golfers to slap on the sunscreen this summer
Tuesday 15th June 2010
Tenovus, the official charity of Ryder Cup Wales, will be at the Ryder Cup Wales Seniors’ Open from the 18th to the 20th June at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club, to encourage golfers to be more sun aware after a recent study conducted by the charity showed that they were at high risk of developing skin cancer due to their prolonged exposure to the sun.
A recent study carried out by Tenovus and the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health showed that 1 in 4 adults did not use any form of sun protection when attending outdoor activities such as golf.
Dr Ian Lewis, Head of Research at Tenovus said;
“Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the UK and has more than doubled in Wales over the last ten years. People who participate in a lot of outdoor leisure activities are at a higher risk of developing the disease due to over exposure.
Our report shows that there are also misconceptions of how to be safe in the sun with people holding the belief that if they apply a higher SPF they can stay out in the sun longer- this is not the case.
People also apply to little sunscreen, do not reapply often enough and perceive a ‘natural’ tan from the sun as a healthier option when compared to a sun bed tan.”
Tenovus’ ‘Here Comes the Sun’ campaign aims to educate people on safe sun behaviour and will be quizzing golfers on the day and assessing their level of sun awareness. The winner will receive two practice day tickets for The 2010 Ryder Cup!
