Tenovus sparks innovation with new research grants
Thursday 24th June 2010
Tenovus, Wales’ leading cancer charity are calling for bright minds to help combat the effects of cancer through a new research opportunity, Tenovus Innovation Grants.
With a cancer incidence that is amongst the highest in the world1, a disproportionately ageing population2 that predicts a continued increase in the incidence of cancer and a health system that is under huge financial pressure, Wales needs to develop new and innovative ways to help support an ever growing number of people throughout their cancer journey.
Tenovus Innovation Grants provide a unique opportunity, taking research out of the traditional lab based environment and focus on the psychosocial treatment of cancer. One example of how Tenovus is leading the way through non-laboratory research is with the Tenovus Sing for Life Choir, which is primarily a research project to measure the physical and emotional impact singing has on cancer patients.
Dr Ian Lewis, Head of Research for Tenovus said,
“A diagnosis of cancer can have a devastating effect on patients and their families, bringing with it a wide array of problems that need to be addressed at an already difficult time and throughout a patient’s cancer journey.
Tenovus strives to tackle issues of inequity and access facing patients through Tenovus Innovation Grants. This new funding opportunity will identify the most innovative approaches to caring for patients and their families at all stages of their disease, right from diagnosis through to survivorship or end of life care.
These projects will hopefully bridge the inequity that currently exists for cancer patients; ensuring that they benefit from pioneering and groundbreaking research developed by Tenovus.”
Grants will be awarded to researchers who propose innovative ways of aiding the physical, emotional and practical problems that face patients and families experiencing cancer and treatment of the disease and will be awarded to projects of all sizes from £1 to £30,000; bringing Tenovus’ investment in research to an incredible £1 million.
Dr Anita Howman, Tenovus Research Grants Officer added
“We are looking for projects that aim to highlight or meet the needs of cancer patients and their families in Wales. The projects need to demonstrate the beneficial effect on people affected by cancer and have realistic and sustainable aims and objectives. We would also welcome projects in cancer prevention, screening and early detection that help address the ever increasing rates of cancer we see in Wales.
We hope Tenovus Innovation Grants inspire the research community to devise innovative ways to alleviate the negative impact of cancer”.
