Tenovus Open Day in Haverfordwest
30 January 2012
Last Monday (23rd January) over 60 visitors came on
board our Mobile Cancer Support Unit when it stopped at the
Morrisons Car Park in Haverfordwest.
The open day offered the chance both to learn more about the
treatments and services the unit and Cancer Support Team provides
and to explore how Tenovus are going to expand their services in
Pembrokeshire.
"People affected by cancer in Pembrokeshire can already get
information and support both from the Freephone Cancer Support Line
- 0808 808 1010 - and follow up appointments by telephone and in
our Carmarthen office", said Tom Messere, Tenovus' Cancer Support
Adviser for West Wales. "We also plan to start running outreach
sessions in Pembrokeshire very soon."
"We were bowled over by the enthusiasm and support from health
services, other organisations and the general public who came to
see us" added Sharon Topazio, Regional Cancer Support Manager
(South West Wales). "After today we will be working with
these contacts to ensure that new provision compliments existing
services in the county."
"It's been a great day and thanks are due to all the staff and
volunteers who helped, including those at the at the Tenovus shop
in Bridge Street, Haverfordwest, added Tom. "We rely on their
tireless work - and the support of the public - to enable us to run
our services and support our research and campaigning. Peoples kind
custom, donations and time are always welcome at the shop or others
in Tenby, Pembroke and Narberth. There are also chances for
volunteers to help in the delivery of our services"
The Mobile Cancer Support Unit itself is an unique vehicle
delivering cancer treatments and support to the heart of
communities across Wales. It provides a base for services, a
meeting place for groups and health awareness sessions in schools
and at community events.
Originally designed for chemotherapy, the Unit has been adapted
to deliver a range of medical services, according to needs of Local
Health Boards. All medical treatments are delivered by NHS staff to
the highest clinical standards.
"In many parts of Wales it can be a long journey to the nearest
hospital when you may not be feeling at your best, " explained
Richard Pugh, Community Development Manager for Tenovus. "The Unit
brings treatments and support services nearer to people."
