research
Tenovus has a long and distinguished history of funding world class cancer research.
Over the last 40 years, Tenovus scientists have made a huge contribution to the research and treatment of cancer. These include-
-
demonstrating for the first time that Tamoxifen, the world’s most successful breast cancer drug, halted the growth of breast tumours
-
pioneering the use of antibodies as cancer treatments
-
discovering that the most common form of leukaemia was in fact two diseases with distinct characteristics
-
funding the research and training of over 200 PhD studentships.
Our new community based focus provides us with a unique opportunity to conduct innovative and vital research into areas that will not only improve the lives of cancer patients in the future, but will also to provide immediate benefits to the people affected by cancer today. These areas of research include-
-
developing novel models of support and care for cancer patients and their families
-
establishing effective, community lead health promotion and cancer prevention programmes
-
monitoring the uptake and provision of cancer screening programmes and the improvement of early detection
-
methods of effectively providing genetic counselling and the screening of high risk groups
We will also be maintaining our long standing commitment to identifying, developing and training the next generation of cancer scientists and researchers. This is vital since they are the people who will be responsible for the development of new cancer treatments, prevention strategies and models of care and support for many years to come.
